Architecture Academy
Why do a podcast?
Decision making in practice
My colleagues and I needed to find a way to continue learning about relevant research in our field so that our work could benefit society more effectively.
I had the idea that a podcast about the built environment could be an effective and efficient way to share important research about key issues that architects had to deal with on a daily basis. My hope was that it would help us make better decisions.
Why the podcast format?
Architects are busy people, often overworked with little time and appetite for reading about architectural research outside working hours. You can listen to podcasts while doing the dishes, on the way into work, jogging, in the car or even when you’re at the office. It’s an opportunity to learn while doing the activities you’re going to do anyway.
Access to good ideas for as many people as possible
Very few people have the privilege of going to a top architecture school, it requires a certain amount of money, a certain type of personality and usually a certain upbringing. A podcast could bypass all of these obstacles and provide quality information to anyone who has access to the internet.
But it’s not just architects, there are so many professions and stakeholders involved in the creation of the built environment. The podcast had to be for anyone who was interested in how we build and design the world around us.
Ethics in a complicated world
I came to the conclusion that doing research and continuing to learn in your profession is necessary if you want to act in a decent and ethical way. Without the correct knowledge we are in danger of acting harmfully without knowing we’re doing so.
The aim
After thinking about all of these ideas I decided to create the Architecture Academy podcast, which is an ideas based podcast, open to all which focuses on design education. The idea was to speak to a wide range of leading thinkers and practitioners, with the aim of spreading good ideas and research about design, architecture and the built environment.
The podcast is now available on Spotify, i-tunes and all good podcasting apps. Visit the official website here.
