My Favourite TV Dramas

In no particular order, my all time favourite TV dramas.

Breaking Bad

I must have been told over 100 times that I needed to watch Breaking Bad before I finally sat down to watch it. So many people were telling me it was the best show they had ever seen. I couldn’t understand how it could be so good.  I am now one of those people who say it is probably the greatest TV drama of all time.

Big Little Lies

This show is so beautiful. The music, the people, the scenery, the storytelling. The first series is faultless.

The Leftovers

A captivating and mysterious series from start to finish. I still don’t really know what it all means.

Stranger Things

An incredible opening credits is followed by 80s nostalgia and a wonderful sense of youthful adventure. Staggeringly original and frightening fun all at the same time. Certainly one of the greats.

Black Mirror

This is another series that many were talking up before I saw it and again it didn’t disappoint. A chilling warning of what our immediate future might look like with fast moving technology that no one really understands. Clever, important, relevant. A must watch.

House

Every episode is the same but this medical drama never gets tired. Why? Because the characters are so great. For a show set in a hospital it somehow always manages to be humorous and optimistic about the future. Certainly the best medical drama I’ve ever seen.

Into The Badlands

A guilty pleasure of mine. Martial arts, magic and adventure in a near apocalyptic future. Also has some of the best female characters I’ve ever seen on TV.

The Sopranos

Probably my favourite TV series until Breaking Bad came along. An insightful, subtle, conflicting family drama in the middle of mafia warfare.

Sherlock

I wasn’t expecting much when I first sat down to watch this. What I found was a show that was so brilliantly written I almost couldn’t believe it. The series feels so good and has an atmosphere that feels great. The acting is pitched perfectly.

Suits

This is another series I wasn’t expecting to like. Even after the first episode I wan’t so sure about it. A show about arrogant, ruthless lawyers and their squabbles in a backdrop of glamour and shameless good looks. Not really my thing, or so I thought. It grew to be one of my favourite TV shows of all time. Hits that perfect blend of humour and drama.

Game of Thrones

For many Game of Thrones is a religion. I wouldn’t go that far but it might just be the best tv series ever made. If not the best, then it’s certainly the most complex and ambitious I’ve ever come across. An epic with an almost embarrassing array of multi-layered characters and worlds. Full of magic and politics and tyrants and lessons of leadership, lust, friendship, love and betrayal. GOT has it all. Some of the epic battle scenes are among the best I have ever seen. It surpassed my expectations by such a long way.
